The issue surrounding the legality of so called head shops has being raised once again this week at a seminar in Mullingar, by minister with responsibility for drugs John Curran. Mr Curran said that he is now going to tackle the issue in real terms by coordinating a government response to legality of head shops.

An outright ban on the operation of head shops and their products should be given serious consideration, that is according to Galway West Fianna Fail TD Frank Fahey.

Castlebar Fine Gael town councillor and youth worker Ger Deere said it is blindingly obvious that head shops which have sprung up all over the country require strict regulation because of the dangers of the products they sell. Cllr Deere said products which have emerged to replace BZP, which was banned last year, must also be banned if they have psychoactive and other side effects.
